La patología respiratoria aguda es una de las más prevalentes y de mayor morbilidad y mortalidad en los Servicios de Urgencia Hospitalarios (SUH).

La elevada carga asistencial que padecen estos servicios facilita el colapso y los errores en el diagnóstico y manejo de los pacientes. Los médicos y enfermeras de urgencias deben estar actualizados en la atención inicial de la insuficiencia respiratoria aguda y establecer una estrategia de diagnóstico y tratamiento.

La asistencia a la patología respiratoria aguda más frecuente como las infecciones respiratorias (bronquitis aguda y neumonía) y agudizaciones de EPOC y de asma debe realizarse de acuerdo con las Guías y Consensos establecidos, disminuyendo las deficiencias y la variabilidad en la atención. Los SUH y los Servicios de Neumología deben interrelacionarse y establecer pautas de actuación conjuntas en el tratamiento de estas enfermedades.
